The Grain Brain

If you haven’t read The Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter, you are missing out on an interesting argument about the cause and effect relationship of the modern day human diet and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

A few interesting points:

  1. Carbohydrates elevate blood sugar levels which cause brain inflammation.
  2. Foods with higher glycemic indices- whole grain bread included- cause blood sugar levels to stay elevated for longer periods of time.
  3. Cholesterol and fat are protective in the brain.
  4. Foods high in omega-3s like olive oil, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil play a big role in providing antioxidant and high fat benefits.

Dr. Perlmutter’s work supports lots of what we hear in Alzheimer’s circles.  The Grain Brain provides a good explanation for why everyone, from those with healthy brains to the advanced dementia population should be eating lots of good fats, coconut oil, olive oil, grass fed beef, and avocado.

I think The Grain Brain is definitely worth the read.  It’s not so much a fad-diet as it is a look into the food industry and metabolism of most common foods we eat.  Very enlightening!

DQ Nugget of Insight: The mysterious cause of Alzheimer’s lies somewhere between epigenetics and the environment.  There is some force that turns on or off the mechanism that controls brain aging and cell death.  The role of cell inflammation related to the metabolism of sugar- as our culture now consumes the greatest amount of sugar and simple carbohydrates in our history as humans- is one such plausible mechanism.

And, it’s one we can control.
