Automatic Speech for Motor Initiation

The next time someone with middle to late stages of Alzheimer’s has difficulty standing up or sitting down, try the 1-2-3 count.

It is a very well-ingrained human habit- to expect an action at the end of “1,2,3”.

And it may sound so simple as to be overlooked as an actual technique, but when other obvious measures have failed to work, what’s one more simple strategy?

So using your best inflection, building excitement in your voice with each number, help initiate the movement on the third count.

This works for standing up, sitting down, letting go, scooting… and combined with an exaggerated, demonstrated command, it can be very effective.
